Melissa Data Releases IP2Location Database for Web Marketing

Web sites can learn the exact geographic location of visitors 
for improved targeting, sales and fraud protection

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA – October 17, 2003—Melissa Data, a leading provider of software and services for the direct marketing industry, today announced the release of IP2Location, a database product that enables Web sites to identify the geographic location of their visitors using IP addresses. 

The database is used to match an incoming IP (internet protocol) address to the country, region, state, city, and ISP of the Web visitor. By learning the location of visitors in real time, Web managers can display localized content, improve click-throughs and sales, prevent fraud, and implement many other solutions.

For the advertising and marketing industry, knowing your Web visitor’s origin enables you to offer unique banners, distribute customized marketing messages, redirect visitors to appropriate Web pages, display native language, or manage digital rights.

For e-commerce Web sites, the IP2Location data tool can be used to identify suspicious Internet orders to reduce charge-backs, avoid orders from high risk countries, display native currency on order forms, and calculate correct tax fees based on country and regions.

“Knowing where a visitor to your Web site comes from is critical for Internet marketers,” said Tim Clark, analyst at The FactPoint Group, a research and consulting firm in Los Altos, CA. “Do you know your customer in detail or in a cursory way? Knowing details about a visitor’s origin also can help protect a Web publisher against password-sharing, abuse of service, or credit card fraud. If you don’t serve a specific region, you can block traffic from that area,” Clark added. 

IP2Location has many practical applications for network security as well. Web developers can use the tool to identify the origin of network intrusion and apply law enforcement, and track IP addresses to ensure compliance with national or international laws. 

The IP2Location database contains more than 1.5 million IP addresses from 235 countries. It has over 95 percent matching accuracy at the country and ISP levels.

Priced at $349 per year, the 35.2 MB database is available via download with six bi-monthly updates. IP2Location is compatible with popular database programs including Microsoft SQL, MySQL, Microsoft Access and others.
